How to do my Tie Dye?

The CLOUD Technique

1. Wash your sweater in cold water.

2. Lay your sweater on a flat and clean surface while it is still very wet.

3. Make small, circular movements with your fingers to create random clusters of fabric. Let your creativity run wild.

4. Next, bring the entire sweater together to form a “ball” of compressed fabric*.

*Careful!  When you make your “ball” of fabric, try to leave an equal amount of fabric on either side of the sweater. This way, you will achieve a fairly similar result on both sides. Otherwise, the back might end up with more dye and the front might stay mainly white.

5. Use a few elastics* (between 3 and 5) to hold everything in place. The tighter your elastics are, the greater the contrast there will between the white and colored parts of your sweater. So if you want the difference to be more subtle and less pronounced, do not tie the garment too tightly with elastics.

6. Fill a basin (bucket or other metal, plastic or glass container) with 10 litres of very hot, non-boiling water (very hot water from the tap will work). Then pour HALF of your package of dye that came with your sweater kit into the water. Stir until the mixture is completely dissolved. Make sure there is no remaining undissolved powder.

7. Pour half a cup of regular salt into the water, to fix the color. Stir until the mixture is completely dissolved.

8. Put on plastic gloves to protect your hands and then submerge your sweater. If needed, use a stick to keep your sweater at the bottom of the basin.

9. For the Petals colour (pink), leave to soak for 10 minutes if you want a softer pink, or 20 minutes for a more vibrant effect.

For the Tan colour (beige), leave to soak for 20 minutes to achieve an optimal result.

10. Rinse thoroughly in cold water until the water becomes clear. Gently remove the elastics and then rinse again for about 3 minutes.

11. Machine wash your sweater SEPERATELY in a regular cycle with a mild soap. Lay flat to dry.

The OMBRE Technique

1. Wash your sweater in cold water.

2. Fill a basin (bucket or other metal, plastic or glass container) with 10 litres of very hot, non-boiling water (very hot water from the tap will work). Then pour HALF of the package of dye that came with your sweater kit into the water. Stir until the mixture is completely dissolved. Make sure there is no remaining undissolved powder.

3. Pour half a cup of regular salt into the water, to fix the color. Stir until the mixture is completely dissolved.

4. Submerge the bottom of your sweater (about 30 cm) into your basin. Leave the rest of your sweater on the edge.

You can choose the height of your Ombré. If you only want a little bit of colour on the bottom, submerge it less. If you’d prefer the colour to reach the top, submerge your sweater deeper.

5. Use a stick to keep your sweater submerged. Be careful not to splash the rest of the sweater with drops of dye.

6. Leave the dye to seep into the fabric and gradually rise up your shirt. For the Petals colour (pink), leave to soak for 10 minutes if you want a softer pink, or 20 minutes for a more vibrant effect.

For the Tan colour (beige), leave to soak for 20 minutes to achieve an optimal result.

7. Rinse thoroughly in cold water until the water becomes clear, approximately 3 minutes.

8. Machine wash your sweater SEPERATELY in a regular cycle with a mild soap. Lay flat to dry.
