A Moment of Peace: Techniques to Exercise Calm in Body and Mind

If you're keeping to a busy schedule, finding moments of calm can feel like a luxury. We want to equip you with an arsenal of relaxation methods to help you reclaim your peace of mind. Below are some tried-and-true techniques that can help leave you feeling rejuvenated and refreshed:

Mindful Meditation: Find a quiet space, close your eyes, and focus on your breath. Notice each inhale and exhale, allowing thoughts to come and go without judgment. There are many meditation approaches out there, so just find the one that works for you. The goal is to release your mind from a state of frenzied thinking and instead bring your mind to the present moment where you can feel more at peace.

Forest Bathing: A term originally coined in Japan, Forest Bathing is recommended as a tool to reconnect with the natural environment and unplug from daily stressors. It doesn't matter if you don't live near a forest; you can simply take a stroll through a park and breathe in the fresh air. Nature has a remarkable ability to soothe the soul and quiet the mind.

Breathwork Techniques: In moments of stress, our breathing can become shallow and restricted. By drawing our focus to our breath and mindfully drawing air in, filling our lungs and releasing breath slowly, we are inviting our body to relax, which, in turn, helps calm a racing mind.

Yoga and Stretching: Flow through gentle sequences that nurture your body and give your mind focus. Combining breath work and stretches will nourish your body and help you reconnect inwards. Whether you're a seasoned yogi or a beginner, there's a practice that's perfect for you.

Body Scan: Find a place to sit or lie down comfortably, close your eyes, and establish a focused breath. When a calm breathing rhythm is established, mentally start a scan of your body -- start at your toes and work your way up to your head, releasing each muscle group as you go. Feel the stress dissolve with every exhale.

Guided Imagery: Close your eyes and visualize a serene setting – perhaps a sun-kissed beach or a lush evergreen forest. Let your imagination wander as you immerse yourself in this peaceful oasis. Remember, relaxation is not a one-size-fits-all endeavor. Explore these methods and find what resonates with you. Different circumstances might call for different techniques, but just know you've always got these options in your back pocket whenever you need a little recalibration.
